SAP Leads in ERP Solutions to 10 Verticals in Europe, Says IDC

A new IDC study examining the Western European ERP applications market by vertical industries shows that SAP leads in all 10 industries covered, including government, financial services, and healthcare and education. The study also ranks vendors at the country level in Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain. Oracle is ahead of SAP in some segments in the UK and France; PeopleSoft leads in one segment in France.
In Germany, SAP maintains an overwhelming lead in all segments covered in the study. In Italy and Spain, SAP also leads in all segments.
SAP seeks further growth in the industries that it refers to as “under-penetrated" -- the non-manufacturing verticals -- and it is investing in core industry-specific functionality for the financial services, public sector, and retail industries. The second- and third-ranking vendors, Oracle and PeopleSoft, have yet to make tough choices in terms of what industries and what countries to bet their efforts in Europe.
The future will bring increased industry specialization to the ERP market, and IDC expects an increase in vertical granularity, with a focus on micro verticals. A midsize French commercial printing company, for example, is likely to seek a solution in French for midsize printing companies, rather than accepting a generic ERP solution for services companies.
“ERP vendors are increasingly leveraging channel partners to deliver industry-specific solutions, especially to the small and midsize business segment of the ERP market. This implies that recruitment and management of channel partners is critical to sustain a competitive advantage in the market, and the vendor with the strongest channel partners is likely to take market share," said Bo Lykkegaard, senior research analyst in IDC's European Software Group. 22.12.2004, IDC
